About

UNTITLED - UNBUILT - UNAUTHORED

With years of experience directing interior design services at a market leading condominium development firm, I've developed valued experience not just in design, but in leadership, business and construction.

However, the day-to-day scope of the industry limit opportunities to engage in exploratory work. This site has become a creative outlet; a personal archive of speculative design; illustrations of untitled, unbuilt works. It is a library of sketches that explore narratives in spatial design, materiality and construction that I'd otherwise not have the opportunity to engaged with. It represents a belief that interior design is more than aesthetics; its also a medium for storytelling, community making, and identity building. â€‹â€‹

Many of these concepts come from personal moments - usually when I find myself thinking; why did they do it that way? or, they could have made this space feel better for the same cost. Two repeated thoughts that often kick-off the design process. While my aim is originality, I recognize that the work is shaped and influenced by the many talented designers I encounter through social media and design publications. Creativity never exists in isolation, its part or a larger community of cooperative story-telling and I hope my work adds value and richness to that shared story.

I use a range of digital tools to create these illustrations. They're intentionally abstracted and stylized, and incorporate props, textures and artworks, sourced from a variety of other creators. These elements, clipped from their original sources and spliced into compositional vignettes, create architectural collages, giving voice and visual narrative to the work.

Some of the illustrations include depictions of artistically stylized nude figures, which I've included to reinforce how the imagined spaces would be used. They are meant to script a visual story of the friction between nudity, hygiene, gender, masculinity, and sexuality. The intention was to narrate a tail of changing (North-American) social norms and its implications on our identity, society and public space design. Design is never neutral, it reflects the values and perspectives of its creator. These images, and the stories they tell, are shaped through my lens as a white, cis, gay man, and can challenge mainstream norms.
