camp comfort station
Space:
Recreational
Drawings on firsthand experience across campgrounds in multiple provinces, this speculative design of a campsite comfort station reimagines a typically overlooked structure through the lens of functionality, safety, and the campers mindset.
A key concern address is cleanliness, an ongoing issue in facilities maintained by season staff with varying degrees of attentiveness. This design proposes carefully sloped floors that direct excess water away from the structure, paired with integrated high-pressure spray heads that periodically wash down surfaces, reducing the need for active maintenance.
Equally considered is the balance between privacy and safety. Rather than fully enclosed stalls, showers are placed along the exterior perimeter, screened for modesty but open at the top and bottom to maintain visual connection with the site. The result is a space that offers just enough privacy for comfort, while remaining visibly connected to the communal setting, discouraging misuse through passive observation. Visually confusing the structures transition from interior space to exterior space force users into a state of accountability, removes potential for untoward activity, fostering a safe, inclusive space for families and friends.
Finally, the comfort station embraces the spirit of camping by dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. Showers and sinks are experienced al fresco, encouraging user to engage more consciously with their environment. The design turns a utilitarian moment into one of quiet reflection, bringing the philosophy of camping into every detail.
