Space:

Recreational

The conceptual design for a premium fitness facility's change room encourages the user to interrogate the performative culture embedded within the fitness world - where being seen is as intrinsic as the act of training itself. Regardless of gender or orientation, the space forces the user to acknowledge and reflect on the often-unspoken reality that gym culture operates under a constant gaze.

The design is structure as a stage. A continuous loop of lockers lines the perimeter, echoed by modular lighting and a ring of benches, establishing a choreography of arrival, preparation, and departure. Users find themselves both audience and performer in this orchestrated environment.

At its core, a monolithic block - visually weighty and grounded - appears as is carved out to house key wellness functions. In contrast to that weight, the sauna and steam-room has been constructed of reeded glass, these glowing interiors force the users into a state of partially visibility, blurring the lines between retreat and display.

Spatial contrast is carefully articulated through bold colour blocking and material juxtaposition: dark versus light, solid versus translucient, heavy versus ethereal. Long sight lines and semi-transparent boundaries encourage openness, accountability, and safety, promoting inclusivity by its very design.

In making the rituals of fitness and recovery visible, this change room redefines utility as performance, offering not just function, and beauty, but an opportunity of forced reflect by its users.
